This summer, Savannah-Chatham public schools will be working with about 2,000 students who need to brush up on skills, make up failed courses or who just want to get ahead academically.
Funding limitations make it impossible for public schools to offer free courses to everyone. But there are some programs being offered this summer.
Students participating in the grade-level reading campaign at East Broad, Gadsden, Haven, Hodge and Spencer elementary schools will participate in a summer reading program at East Broad Street K-8 School.
Second- and fourth-grade students who did not meet promotion standards have been assigned to reading programs at elementary summer school sites.
Middle school students who failed courses or did not meet the seventh-grade promotion standards have been assigned to summer school courses at middle school sites.
High school summer school courses are open to any high school student who wants to get ahead or who failed courses. The summer school program at Savannah High is open to all students.
The cost for Savannah-Chatham students is $600 per teacher-taught course and $300 per online course. Students may earn up to two credits. The cost for out-of-district students is $700 for teacher-taught courses and $400 for online courses.
Teacher-taught courses include Math 1-4, Spanish 1-3 and French 1-3. Online courses include ninth- and 10th-grade Composition/Literature, American Literature, British Literature, World History, U.S. History, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, Algebra 1-3, American Government, Economics, Marketing Principals, Advanced Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Computer Applications 1-2 and Business Communications.
The programs at Beach and Johnson High schools are for those students only.
